About Dr. Marjorie Zauderer

Dr. Marjorie Zauderer has spent much of her extensive career treating patients diagnosed with mesothelioma and other cancers of the lungs and chest.

She is the co-director of the Mesothelioma Program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated hospital located in New York City.

Dr. Marjorie Zauderer’s Medical Background

Dr. Zauderer earned her medical degree from Columbia University’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons in 2006.

She spent 2006 through 2012 completing a residency in internal medicine at New York Presbyterian Hospital on the Columbia campus. She continued her training with a fellowship in hematology and medical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center from 2009 to 2012.

Dr. Zauderer completed an additional fellowship in medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College in 2012. Before joining the Mesothelioma Program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, she also worked briefly at Baptist Hospital of Miami located in Florida.

Dr. Zauderer is licensed to practice medicine in several states, though she has spent most of her career in New York.

Highlights of Dr. Marjorie Zauderer’s Medical Career

Dr. Zauderer was presented with the Department of Defense Career Development Award for her research on the role of the BAP1 gene in mesothelioma. BAP1 is a tumor suppressor gene, which means it helps regulate cell growth and prevent cells from growing uncontrollably.

Studies suggest that mesothelioma patients with alterations in the BAP1 gene may have a better prognosis compared to those without these genetic changes.

As of April 2024, she’s helping to lead a clinical trial that’s testing the immunotherapy drug pembrolizumab (brand name Keytruda®) combined with intensity-modulated radiation therapy. The trial is recruiting patients diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma who aren’t eligible for surgery.
